o many ABC books are full of the same boring words and phrases. We wanted to do something a little different.

Begun as an exercise to design SOMETHING every day, Alpha Bytes is a fresh take on an old idea: take an ABC book and fill it with nerdy words and phrases, bold colors and awesome illustrations. We're planning to finally finish all these and make a small book out of them sometime this year.

Update: Prints for sale!

n order to get myself in the habit of drawing more regularly, I'll be picking a random news story and giving myself about an hour and a half to illustrate it. Should be fun to look back on at the end of the year.

ich Sullivan is an incredibly talented photographer from Cocoa, FL. The problem is, not many people knew it.

It seems every time someone designs a logo for a photographer it's some variation of a camera body, crosshairs, a lens or an aperture. I wanted to stay far away from that. I wanted something that hinted at the fact that Rich was a photographer, but didn't scream it. A subtle, classic approach just like his photography. What I came up with was a monogram encased in a frame the shape of medium format film. Next, the "RS" was turned into a pattern and it along with the shape of the medium format inspired box were carried out throughout the identity package. For the business cards, Rich was hooked up with some great letterpress cards by Mama's Sauce in Orlando. Finally, the new brand was integrated with a 4ormat portfolio so Rich would have a place on the web to post his photos.

okabla is a site to help people compare the pros and cons of two things. There's a lot of this content already on the web, but it's usually buried in a long article. Mokabla wants to take all that content and put it into their system to help make some sense of it.

To increase the number of comparisons on the site, Mokabla wanted to reach out to some of the bloggers and writers already creating this type of content and invite them to add it to the site. This select group of writers would all receive an email telling them about the site. The email would then direct them to this landing page to tell them more about the site and why they should use it. Mokabla came to me with an already designed look and feel and all of the content they wanted on the page. My job was to organize it and present it in the best way possible.

In the past, when someone was struggling with thoughts of suicide, there weren't many options. You could call a suicide hotline, maybe go to a local counselling center or talk with a friend. The problem is, none of those options are very anonymous. Sometimes that fear of being found out can keep someone who truly needs help from seeking it. IMAlive hopes to be that place where people can get help and work through these tough issues.

A collaborative project between To Write Love on Her Arms and the Kristin Brooks Hope Center, IMAlive officially launches in April, 2011.

March 2011
n 2009, TWLOHA started
hosting MOVE Community Conferences in cities across the country. MOVE began as a way of equipping and educating communities about the issues TWLOHA addresses: depression, addiction, self-injury, suicide and the role a trusted community plays in bringing hope to those who feel broken. During the two-day conference, attendees participate in discussions led by professional counselors and "explore what's behind these struggles, what drives them, what recovery looks like and how we can make a difference".

Last year, I worked with TWLOHA to put together a binder attendees could use to take notes. This year, they wanted to put together something a little more permanent, so we began working on a workbook. The new books are much more durable than their binder predecessors and use a series of stickers to mark them for each city the conference is in.

his September, a group of friends came together to start something they hope will bring life to a dying community through art. Klaas Co., along with Rich and Elly Sullivan, Denny and Lindsay Kolsch, Allison Vander Molen and Cara Sykes make up what's now come to be known as Brick & Mortar.

To kick things off, we held a free show with Washington D.C. based musician, Andy Zipf. With less than a week to promote the event, we had close to 150 people show up, enjoy some free music and hear what Brick & Mortar's plans are. Hopefully this is just the start of something good.

he iPad is the perfect reading device. Unfortunately, there aren't many apps that live up to the new reading experience the iPad promises. The problem is not the iPad, it's not taking into account the most important part of the app... how people use it.The Reader Pad Concept was an idea to see if we could fill in some of the gaps left by other apps. An RSS reader that would take advantage of all the iPad has to offer. A reader that didn't get in the way of reading. At some point, we'd love to see this come to life, but for now it's just the beginnings of an idea.

ounded in 1994WEGO Ministries seeks meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of people throughout the world. It started first with a women's home in Cocoa Beach and eventually lead to Nicaragua. Jogar de Gloria (New Hope) Children's Home is located just outside the city of Jinotep and currently houses around 15 children. This year a secondary school was opened at the home and is providing children in the community with an education they would otherwise have missed out on.

With the economy's tanking the last few years, donations have dropped sharply and Jogar de Gloria has had a pretty difficult time making ends meet. That's when someone had a brilliant idea: start a coffee company with all the profit going directly to Jogar de Gloria. That's when Nueva Esperanza Coffee was born. In the few months the company has existed it's attracted a pretty loyal following. The problem now is growing that small, dedicated following into a larger group capable of generating the revenue needed to sustain the home.

Over the new few months, we'll be working with NE Coffee to help develop the brand and the sales necessary to keep the coffee selling and the home running. One of the first steps has been a naming contest to pick a new name for the company. We put together a simple website, poster and some t-shirts to get things rolling and are working closely with NE Coffee to help them grow over the next year.
